Poulenc Oboe Sonata

What I love most about this piece is how it captures the full expressive range of the oboe. The first movement opens with a mysterious and somber theme, demanding deep emotional connection and control. The second movement brings a gentle, almost wistful melody that feels intimate and reflective. Then the finale bursts with energy and quirky charm, showcasing Poulenc’s witty, French musical personality.

Performing this sonata challenged me technically and musically from mastering Poulenc’s subtle phrasing to balancing the intense dynamics and intricate rhythms with the piano. It’s a piece that requires both sensitivity and a strong sense of character, making it one of the most rewarding works I’ve had the privilege to explore.
